Cinnamon Mythology

The warm, exotic scent of cinnamon has been favored since antiquity. In China, it was used as incense, while the Egyptians used it in the embalming process and Hebrews used it in anointing rituals. Cinnamon was also one of the first spices, along with frankincense and myrrh. The curled quills of cinnamon were scarce and costly. Arab traders told stories of cinnamon sticks used to make the nests of the fabled cinnamologus bird. In Greece, the mythical phoenix rose from the ashes of a magical fire built of cinnamon, myrrh and spikenard.
